Alexander Rivera

The community around you shapes the individual you become. As a senior in my final semester on the Student Advisory Board, it has been a privilege to work along side and grow with the ambitious students of the Norton School. What resonates to me most about retail is that it’s all about people. It was my imperative to become a leader in the Lundgren Center community to develop the relationship between the students, the faculty and our Corporate Advisory Board partners.

My experiences on SAB and in the retail environment have allowed me a skill set that that I can use to add greater value to my fellow students and to my colleagues in the workplace. This semester, I am proud to serve as the ambassador for Deloitte LLC, JCP and Zale Corp. After graduation, I am eager to start my career in store management for Macy’s in Las Vegas, Nevada where I will be able to lead my team for the Macy’s customer!

My experience in the retail industry includes working as a Cashier at Fry’s Food and Drug, an Overnight Remodeler at Target, and a Merchandising Intern at Walmart. From working in these positions, I have gained a broad and diverse array of experiences that have allowed me comprehensive understanding of how companies develop and execute initiatives to meet customer needs.

In my extracurricular activities I have served many roles within Enactus (formerly SIFE) including Presentation Team Coach, Vice President of Funds Development and Project Manager for the World Work Project. As Presentation Team Coach and VP of Funds Development I assisted in preparing the UA|SIFE presentation team for competitive success and was responsible for netting over $6,000 in funding for philanthropic

ventures. As Project Manager for the World Work Project, I was responsible for helping Tucson refugees gain jobs and integrate into the Tucson community.

Last semester, I was honored to accept the Spencer A. Block scholarship on behalf Buffalo Exchange for my entrepreneurial drive and this year I plan involve the movers and shakers of Tucson into the Lundgren Center as a member of the Retailing Entrepreneurship Club. In addition, I am pleased to take on a role in Student Advisory Board as a developer of new programs and events adding unique dimensions to benefit my contemporaries.
