Sustainable Design Challenge

April 12-13, 2024

The 2024 Sustainable Design Challenge is a two-day competition that brings teams from across disciplines at the University of Arizona to create novel solutions to specific design problems and/or challenges. The winning solution, product, or service that solved the sustainability challenge will be the best reflection of the judging criteria: desirable by the consumer, economically viable from a business perspective, and technologically feasible. The competition is sponsored by the Lundgren Retail Collaborative and the Retailing and Consumer Science program in the Norton School of Human Ecology.

Deadline to register is April 5, 2024.

Only 20 teams are able to participate.

The top 3 teams will receive awards with 1st place winning $3,000.

About the Challenge

You will have five hours on Friday to develop your solution and prepare a six-slide presentation.

Then on Saturday, you will compete against other teams for the ultimate prize. As you go, you will get feedback about your work and a chance to make revisions.

The specific design challenge will be revealed at the start of the competition on April 12, 2024 at 2:00 pm. 

​Get a head start

Starting on March 20th, teams can complete two exercises prior to the competition and get a head start in this competition.
●    Design Thinking exercise (earn up to 20 points)
●    How to Brainstorm exercise (earn up to 20 points)
The pre-work points will be added to the Round 1 and Round 2 scores to select the top teams.

The pre-work exercises close on April 10, 2024.

Rules and Guidelines

This is a team competition. The competition is limited to 20 teams. All team members must be present during the competition Friday 4/12/2024 2:30-8:00 pm and Saturday 4/13/2024 9:00 am-3:20 pm.
 

Team Composition and Requirements

Teams must have three or four full-time undergraduate students who are currently enrolled at the University of Arizona. Students may be from any major or academic program. All team members must have an active UANet ID and UA email address to register and participate in this competition.

Registration Deadline

Team member names and UArizona email addresses must be provided during registration. Once 20 qualified teams have registered, registration will be closed. The last possible day for team registration is 4/5/24. Team members cannot be added after registration is submitted. 

Awards

First place: $3,000

Second place: $1,500

Third Place $1,000

Additional prizes and awards may be made by the competition organizers. All prizes will be distributed equally among team members.
