Greetings! My name is Mariah Hoskins, and I am a senior at The University of Arizona. This past summer, I had the privilege of interning in Los Angeles, California with Ross Stores Inc., specifically in the Dd’s Discounts Girls 4-16 Tops and Outerwear Department. Before completing this internship, most of my retail experience was on the store side. However, over those ten weeks, I learned the importance of the corporate side of retail, and how every decision matters.
I was fortunate enough to have a Buyer and an Assistant Buyer as mentors who not only believed in me, but had my best interest at heart. They taught me everything they knew about the buying world such as building vendor relationships, analyzing current trends and sales data, completing shipping and handling procedures, and most importantly…the use of Excel! The skills I acquired during this internship-effective communication, analytics, time management, and much more-have helped me tremendously in my current job as a Team Lead for Adidas as well as a current student studying Retailing and Consumer Sciences.
Overall, I highly recommend anyone who is interested in the corporate side of retail to seek out internships, whether at Ross or other retail companies. However, I encourage RCSC students to utilize the resources provided by the Terry J. Lundgren Center for Retailing. The center has done a phenomenal job at helping students achieve their dreams, and discovering their passion for retail! I know I am one of those students, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunities that have been bestowed upon me.
I hope that reading this inspires you to pursue your dreams, and to find a company that fits you! If you have any questions about my internship experience or the RCSC major in general, please feel free to reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
